Message Intermittent Speedo and Tach repair..

Well I was searching for a guide on how to remove the cluster so I could swap out my bad one with a good one I picked up on Ebay. And in another post, someone said that some solder joints get weak and break on the Tach and Speedo, causing them to work intermit(but no pics). So now I know that it’s not a hard failure so I can fix it. So I get home and start pulling it apart and this is what I found.

As you pull the cluster out, you will notice the mounting screws for the instrument are also make the contact of the signals to the meter movements. So be gentle removing and reinstalling (or R&R) them. ;)

First pull off the clear cover and the bezel and then start removing the needed screws for which ever meter you are pulling out. So after the screws are out, the instruments will fall out. So be careful and support them.

Now the speedo also has this other harness that connects and has to be disconnected for full removal. Pull down on the tab and firmly but gently pull them apart.

As you can see, the post for the meter movement for the speedo has broken loose and shifted. They are not “fixed” in the meter’s case. I guess, the less ridged, the less chance of vibration to not break the joints, but it seems to still happen.

And here 2 fractured joints in the tach.

For the gas, oil, and H2O temp, the meter movements are bolted to the circuit board. Smaller meters so less vibration, which is most likely why this design was made.

The meters contact shafts have now had their height reset, resoldered and liquid flux cleaned off.

Reinstall and enjoy the ride..

The end….

PS , if you use a desoldering iron….and check it for listening for suctions, make sure you pull you hair back..=(
